Debris piled through the streets of Johnstown after the flood of May 31, 1889, when the South Fork dam above the city gave way and sent a wall of water down the Conemaugh Valley. The tangle of timber, iron and household goods in this view shows how thoroughly the water scoured the town and how much had to be cleared before rebuilding could begin. The caption card ties the scene to disaster relief and to Freemason lodges, which took part in the recovery, though the record's details are unverified. The photograph was made by the firm Langill & Darling.
