Numbered as Landmark 26, this view appears to belong to a series of photographs recording the ruin left by the Johnstown Flood of May 31, 1889. A dam upstream of the city gave way after days of heavy rain, releasing a wall of water that killed more than 2,000 people and swept away much of the town. The caption tracings point to disaster relief and the Freemasons, reflecting the aid that arrived from outside the region in the weeks afterward. Because the catalog data is old and unverified, the specific site shown is best identified through its landmark number.
