A grim scene of rescuers carrying a body out of the wreckage marks this stereograph as a record of the aftermath rather than the flood itself. On May 31, 1889, the failure of the South Fork Dam sent a wall of water down the Little Conemaugh and Conemaugh valleys into Johnstown, Pennsylvania, killing more than 2,000 people and sweeping away whole neighborhoods. Photographers like George Barker, whose name appears as the copyright holder, sold stereo cards like this one so that viewers could see the devastation in three dimensions. The card's caption tracings are unverified, so its exact location within the wreck is uncertain.
