Its caption, "Somebody's darling," marks this stereograph as a picture of an unidentified victim, the kind of scene that showed how many dead were never claimed after the flood. The disaster came on May 31, 1889, when the South Fork dam above the city failed and a wall of water tore down the Little Conemaugh valley, killing more than 2,000 people. The card credits photographer George Barker, who sold stereo views of the wreckage to a public eager to see the devastation. The subject tags also list churches, a reminder of how thoroughly the flood reached into the town's community life.
