A numbered building belonging to the Sisters of Charity, marked "#12," is the focus here, set in Johnstown after the flood of May 31, 1889. A failed earthen dam upstream on the South Fork of the Little Conemaugh River sent a wall of water through the valley, killing roughly 2,200 people. The caption card links the scene to disaster relief and to the Freemasons, who were among the groups that organized aid in the weeks afterward. Photographs like this one record how the city's religious and fraternal institutions took part in the recovery.
