Pullman sleeping cars and locomotives lie twisted together at Conemaugh, where floodwaters tore them from the tracks and jammed them into a heap of wreckage. The disaster began on May 31, 1889, when the South Fork dam above the valley failed after days of heavy rain, sending a wall of water down the valley and killing more than 2,000 people. Pittsburgh photographer Histed, who registered the image for copyright, recorded the ruined rail equipment in the aftermath, when the wreckage had become a grim public sight.
