The Statue of Liberty stands on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, a site that was known as Bedloe's Island until 1956, and this view places the copper figure on its granite pedestal with visitors gathered around its base. The statue, a gift from the people of France, was dedicated in 1886 and designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, with its iron framework engineered by Gustave Eiffel. Pictures of the monument from this period often show how the island drew crowds of tourists, a sign of its growing role as a symbol of immigration and freedom.
