Liberty Island, in New York Harbor, is the setting for this color view of the Statue of Liberty, a monument that was a gift from the people of France to the United States. The statue, designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi with its iron framework engineered by Gustave Eiffel, was dedicated in October 1886 and quickly became a symbol of welcome for millions of immigrants arriving by ship. Look at the island setting itself: the statue stands on a low base of land surrounded by water, a reminder that the monument was built to be seen from the harbor as travelers approached the city.
