The face of the Statue of Liberty is the subject here, shot while scaffolding still wrapped the upper body of the monument during its restoration in the mid-1980s. The statue, a gift from France dedicated in 1886, had been left with deteriorating copper and an aging internal iron framework, and the 1984 to 1986 work replaced the torch and much of the structure before the 1986 centennial. Because the photographer was working close to the copper skin, the picture shows a rarely seen view of the figure's features partly obscured by work platforms, a contrast between the icon most visitors know from a distance and the industrial effort needed to keep it standing.
