The crown's seven windows are the detail that sets this view apart, each one a small opening that lets visitors look out over New York Harbor from inside the statue's head. The crown has been open to the public since the statue's 1886 dedication, when the copper monument was a gift from France and its interior was built for climbing. Because the windows let in light, the crown's spiked rays read clearly in photographs of the statue's exterior, and the views through them show how far the harbor and Manhattan spread below. Color photographs from the mid-1980s, a period when the monument was being restored for its centennial, capture the copper surfaces and the sky in a way that black-and-white pictures of the same spots cannot.
