Few views of the Statue of Liberty show her raised hand so close, with the copper fingers gripping the torch above a web of steel scaffolding. The image dates to the 1984-86 restoration, when workers took the torch down and replaced it with a new one clad in copper and gilded with gold leaf. The statue was a gift from France, dedicated in 1886, and sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi designed the figure while Gustave Eiffel's firm built its internal iron framework. Photos from this campaign capture the work of repairing a monument that had weathered a century of salt air and exposure.
