The torch and crown of the Statue of Liberty are the focus here, framed against an open blue sky rather than the wider harbor view that many photographs of the monument show. The statue was a gift from the people of France to the United States, designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and dedicated on Liberty Island in New York Harbor in 1886. Its copper skin has weathered from reddish-brown to the green patina visible today, and the raised torch and seven-rayed crown are among its most recognizable features. Close views like this one show how much of the monument's symbolism sits in its upper section.
