The view from behind the Statue of Liberty is far less familiar than her face toward the harbor, which is what makes this frame worth a second look. The copper back of the figure, with the folds of her robe and the upright line of the torch arm, rises against an open blue sky with no crowd or ferry in sight. Statue of Liberty, a gift from the people of France, was dedicated on Liberty Island in New York Harbor in 1886, and its copper skin has weathered from reddish-brown to the green patina visitors know today. Photographs taken from this angle are a reminder that the monument was designed to be seen from every side, not only from the water.
