The Statue of Liberty stands on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, and this view puts the face and the spiked crown against open blue sky, with the sculpture's full scale visible from close range. Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi designed the statue, and it was a gift from the people of France to the United States, dedicated in 1886. Its crown has seven rays, often read as the seven seas and continents, and the copper skin has weathered over the decades to the green patina seen today. Close-up frames like this one show detail that is easy to miss from the ferry.
