The Statue of Liberty stands on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, and this view puts her against a heavy, overcast sky that flattens the copper green of her robes into a muted tone. The statue was a gift from the people of France to the United States, designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and dedicated in 1886. Its copper skin has weathered from reddish brown to the verdigris patina seen here over several decades. Pictures taken in changing weather like this one show how the monument reads differently from one day to the next.
