The image shows the Statue of Liberty's raised torch and arm, though the picture has been turned on its side, so the copper arm and flame run horizontally across the frame. The statue, a gift from the people of France to the United States, was dedicated on Liberty Island in New York Harbor in 1886. Its designer, Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, shaped the outstretched arm and torch so they could be seen from the water as a welcome to arrivals, and the torch was later replaced during a restoration in the 1980s.
