Few parts of the Statue of Liberty are as recognizable as the torch, and this photograph isolates its metal flame and the arm that holds it aloft. Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi designed the statue, and the arm was among the first sections completed and displayed, at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876. The copper flame was gilded, and it was closed to visitors for many years after the 1916 Black Tom explosion damaged the statue. This print comes from an album of photographic studies by Jeannette Griffith, and its date of about 1938 is uncertain, as the caption card is unverified.
