Few parts of the statue have changed as much as its torch, and this photograph isolates the metal flame and the arm that holds it aloft. Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi's original torch arm was shown at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876, years before the full statue was assembled in New York Harbor, and the flame was later replaced during restoration work in the 1980s. Jeannette Griffith's album of studies, dated here to about 1938 on an unverified caption card, records the statue's surfaces in close view, showing how the copper skin and its details look up close.
