Few visitors ever saw inside the torch, and this view shows the electric lights and stairways that climbed through the statue's arm to the flame. Electric lighting was part of the torch's design after the statue's dedication in 1886, and public access to the torch gallery ended after the 1916 Black Tom explosion damaged the statue. The print is credited to Jeannette Griffith, but its caption card gives no date, so the exact year it was made is unconfirmed.
