The hand and torch of the Statue of Liberty, shown here apart from the rest of the figure, are the parts most visitors recognize at a glance, since the torch was the statue's most famous feature for decades. Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi designed the statue, which France gave to the United States as a gift of friendship, and it was dedicated in New York Harbor in 1886. The torch was replaced during a 1980s restoration, and the original is now displayed inside the monument. The date on this print is uncertain, so it is best read as a wartime-era view of a landmark that was already a symbol of the city.
