Interior braces, forged to follow the folds of the statue's draperies, are the subject of this study, one of several plates in a photographic album compiled by Jeannette Griffith. Bartholdi's copper figure was held up by an iron framework engineered by Gustave Eiffel's firm, and the thin copper skin was fastened to that skeleton with straps and brackets, so the hidden ironwork had to be shaped to the sheets it supported. Photographing these inner details offers a rare look at a structure most visitors never see. The date of about 1938 is approximate, since the caption card is unverified.
