A close view of a drapery clasp at the statue's left shoulder shows how much finely worked detail sits beneath the broad outline most visitors know. Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi designed the statue, which France gave to the United States, and it was dedicated on Liberty Island in New York Harbor in 1886. This photograph appears as plate IV,4 in an album by Jeannette Griffith, but its date of about 1938 comes from an unverified caption card, so the exact year remains uncertain.
