Woodrow Wilson stands in this half-length portrait, turned to the left, with the Statue of Liberty rising behind him. The pairing was a deliberate piece of political imagery. Wilson was president from 1913 to 1921, and the statue, a gift from France dedicated in 1886, had long stood for American liberty and welcome. This color print is a photomechanical reproduction, a method that made pictures like this widely available in the years around 1919, when Wilson was deeply involved in the Paris peace talks and the debate over the League of Nations.
