The photograph pairs the Cunard liner S.S. Mauretania with the Statue of Liberty, placing a great transatlantic steamer alongside the monument that greeted many arrivals to New York harbor. Mauretania entered service in 1907 and was among the fastest ships on the North Atlantic, which made her a frequent subject for photographers and the press. The record credits the image to Enrique Muller, but that attribution and the 1909 date come from an older caption card and have not been independently verified.
