From the tip of Manhattan at Battery Point, this view looks out across New York Harbor toward the Statue of Liberty, with ships on the water between the shore and the monument. The statue was dedicated in 1886 as a gift from the people of France, designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, and by the late 1890s it had become the city's most recognizable welcome for arriving immigrants. The record credits the photograph to A. Loeffler, but its date and details come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
