Taken from the water, this view and marine photograph shows the Statue of Liberty as arriving passengers would have first seen it. Its maker, J.S. Johnston of New York, marked it with a copyright notice and the number 76, which suggests it belonged to a numbered series of the firm's city views. The statue had been dedicated in October 1886, a gift from the people of France set on Bedloe's Island at the entrance to New York Harbor. By the mid-1890s it was among the most common subjects for commercial views, and pictures like this one helped fix its familiar image for people who had never made the crossing.
