Few harbor views from the 1890s show the Statue of Liberty as plainly as this print, which carries the number 76 and the copyright line of J.S. Johnston, a New York view and marine photographer. The statue had been dedicated on Bedloe's Island in October 1886, a gift from the people of France designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, with its iron framework engineered by Gustave Eiffel. By the mid-1890s it was one of the city's best-known sights for ferry passengers and steamship travelers entering the harbor, and views like this one circulated widely among them.
