Few views of the Statue of Liberty are as revealing as a section drawing, which slices the monument vertically to show what lies inside its copper skin. This sectional elevation, drawn looking south, reveals the iron framework that engineer Gustave Eiffel's firm designed to support the sculpture's thin copper plates, and the spiral stair that climbs through the pedestal and body to the crown. Architects and engineers of the 1880s used such drawings to coordinate the work between sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, who shaped the copper, and the American builders who readied the site on Liberty Island.
