The Statue of Liberty is the subject here, but this drawing shows the work behind the copper: a cross-section looking east, which reveals the internal framework rather than the statue's outward form. Engineer Gustave Eiffel's firm designed the iron skeleton that holds the sheathing in place, and Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi's sculpted skin was built around it. Drawings like this one let builders in France and New York coordinate how the thin copper plates and the iron ribs fit together. Look closely at the lines to see how the interior supports rise toward the torch.
