Unlike the many exterior views of the statue on this board, this one is a section, a drawing that slices the monument along a plane to expose what lies inside. The title's "looking west" fixes the direction of the cut, so the viewer sees the structure as if standing on one side of the cross-section. Such drawings were central to the statue's engineering. Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi designed the copper figure, and Gustave Eiffel's firm built the iron framework that carries its weight and lets the copper skin move with wind and temperature. The dedication took place in 1886, and drawings like this one show how much of the statue's strength is hidden from visitors.
