Numbered fifth in its series, this general view looks north at the full figure of the Statue of Liberty, with its green copper robe and raised torch set against the harbor. The statue stands on Liberty Island in New York Harbor and was a gift from the people of France, dedicated on October 28, 1886. Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi designed the sculpture, and Gustave Eiffel engineered its internal iron framework, which lets the copper skin flex in the wind. Photographs taken from several sides of the monument were often made to record its form and setting.
