The Statue of Liberty stands on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, and the monument's record places this view within the wider Statue of Liberty National Monument in New York County. The statue, a gift from the people of France, was dedicated on October 28, 1886, and it quickly became a symbol of American freedom and of the immigrants who arrived by ship past its torch. Sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi designed the figure, and its iron framework was engineered by Gustave Eiffel's firm. Look closely at the tablet in her left arm, inscribed with the date of American independence.
