The Statue of Liberty stands alone on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, and an aerial view shows how the monument sits within the wider harbor rather than only as a figure on its pedestal. The statue, a gift from the people of France, was dedicated on October 28, 1886, and its copper skin, green from oxidation, became a symbol of welcome for millions arriving by ship. From above, the star-shaped walls of Fort Wood, the base on which the statue rests, are easy to make out, and the surrounding water shows how the island was once a point of arrival for immigrants passing through Ellis Island nearby.
