The Statue of Liberty stands on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, and this view shows a steamer slipping past it on the water, so the monument is seen in motion rather than as a fixed landmark. The statue was a gift from France, designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and dedicated in October 1886, and it quickly became the first sight of America for millions of immigrants arriving by ship. Scenes like this one, with a passing steamer, capture how central the harbor was to arrival and commerce in that era. The title's phrase "Welcome to the Land of Freedom" reflects how the statue was received as a symbol of hope from the moment it rose above the water.
