Taken from the deck of the S.S. Coamo as it pulled away from New York, this view puts the Statue of Liberty in the frame as a departing ship's passengers would have seen it. The photograph was made in December 1941, only weeks after the attack on Pearl Harbor drew the United States into World War II, when departures from New York carried a new weight. The statue, a gift from France dedicated in 1886, had long served as the city's first sight for arrivals, so a picture of it receding behind a ship offers a quieter view of the harbor's farewells. The negative is a nitrate film, a format that was common for news and documentary work of the period.
