Taken around 1911, this black-and-white photograph shows the Statue of Liberty rising above New York Harbor, its green copper figure already a familiar sight to ships arriving in the city. France gave the statue to the United States, and Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi designed its copper skin while Gustave Eiffel engineered the interior iron framework. It was dedicated in October 1886, and by the 1910s it had become one of the country's most recognized symbols, especially for the millions of immigrants who first saw it from the deck of a steamship. The exact date comes from an unverified caption card, so the day the photograph was made is uncertain.
