A photoprint copyrighted by George P. Hall & Son of New York, dated to about 1898 in the record, offers a view of the Statue of Liberty from roughly a dozen years after its dedication in 1886. The monument was a gift from the people of France, designed by sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, with its internal iron framework engineered by Gustave Eiffel. By the late 1890s the copper figure on Liberty Island had become one of the city's most recognizable sights, and publishers sold views like this to visitors and to people who would never make the trip.
