Lit after dark, the Statue of Liberty stands out against New York Harbor in this night view, dated to about January 7, 1947. The print was registered under King Features Syndicate, a major newspaper syndicate, so it likely circulated to papers as a feature picture. Dedicated in 1886 as a gift from France, the statue had long been a familiar emblem of New York and of immigrants arriving by sea, and its illuminated torch made it a striking subject for night photography.
