The statue is seen from above, its torch and crown visible as the plane circles over New York Harbor, a vantage few visitors ever get. The view was taken from an Army aircraft, a reminder that military aviation in the mid-twentieth century made aerial photography of the harbor routine. Liberty Island's star-shaped fort base and the surrounding water give the scene its geometry, while the black-and-white film turns the copper figure into a study in light and shadow. Images like this one show how the monument looked to pilots and airmen, not only to people standing at its base.
