Photographed at night from the promenade, this study looks up at the statue so that its upright figure stands out sharply against the dark sky. It appears as plate III,1 in an album of photographic studies of the Bartholdi Statue of Liberty compiled by Jeannette Griffith. The caption card dates the album to about 1938, but that date is unverified. The statue was dedicated in 1886 as a gift from France, designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, with its copper skin carried on an iron framework engineered by Gustave Eiffel.
