Few views of the Statue of Liberty are as striking as this night scene, which shows the copper figure against the dark harbor in about 1917. Dedicated in 1886 as a gift from the people of France, the statue had by then become one of New York's best-known landmarks, and photographers often sought out its nighttime silhouette and its lighting. This photoprint was made by Irving Underhill of New York City and was copyrighted under a registration number listed in the record, which also notes that the copyright was never renewed. The catalog data comes from an original caption card and has not been independently verified.
