Few views of the Statue of Liberty from the late nineteenth century carry the soft, painterly color of a photochrome, and this one shows the statue standing on Liberty Island as a single, unhurried landmark. The statue was a gift from France, dedicated in New York Harbor in 1886, and by the time this print was made it had become one of the most recognizable symbols in the country. Photochrom prints were made by a process that layered tinted color over a black-and-white photograph, which gave tourist views of the period a postcard-like brightness. The hand coloring adds a further touch of individual work, so the print records both the monument and the tastes of its makers.
