The hand and tablet are the parts of the Statue of Liberty that most visitors never see up close, and this view puts the viewer almost at arm's length from them. The statue's skin is hammered copper, a material that was bright and reddish-brown when it was installed in 1886 and weathered over the following decades into the blue-green patina seen today. The tablet, inscribed with the date of American independence in Roman numerals, rests against the figure's left arm, and the torch that the right hand holds rises above the viewer's head. Close views like this one show the seams, rivets and textured surface of the copper sheets that make up the statue.
