The Statue of Liberty stands on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, and this view places her firmly on her granite pedestal with the water spread out behind her. The statue was a gift from the people of France to the United States, designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and dedicated in 1886. Its copper skin, which had weathered to the green patina familiar today, was still new in the era this sepia tone recalls, so the image shows a monument that was then a fresh symbol of the young nation's welcome to immigrants arriving by sea.
