Sunset light fans out behind the Statue of Liberty as it stands on Liberty Island at the mouth of New York Harbor, the copper figure turned almost gold against the darkening sky. The statue was a gift from the people of France, designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and dedicated in 1886, and its green patina is the result of decades of oxidized copper. Views like this one, taken as the day ends, show why the monument became a symbol of arrival for generations of immigrants who first saw it from the water.
