A bird's-eye view of Maplewood, New Jersey, drawn in 1910, lays out the village as if seen from a point high above its streets, with houses, tree-lined lanes and rail lines rendered in fine detail. The map was made by H. S. Wyllie, one of the illustrators who produced many of the commercial panoramic town views popular in the United States around the turn of the twentieth century. Such views were often commissioned by local boosters and sold to residents and real estate agents, so they record not only the street plan but also the civic pride and expectations of a growing suburb. Maplewood, a commuter community in Essex County, was then expanding as rail service made it practical to live there and work in Newark or New York, which makes the map a useful snapshot of that growth.
