Morristown, New Jersey, is the subject here, and this 1899 bird's-eye view shows the town as its makers wanted it seen: from a high, angled vantage that lets streets, rooftops, and gardens read at once. Landis & Alsop, a firm known for city panoramas, produced such maps in the late nineteenth century to document growing towns and their main buildings. Morristown, a county seat in the hills of northern New Jersey, was a prosperous community by then, and its wealthy residents and rail connections to New York helped shape its appearance. Panoramic maps like this one were popular with local boosters and residents, so the view doubles as a portrait of civic pride as well as a street-level record.
