Laid out below a high, angled viewpoint, Wilmington sits where the Brandywine meets the Christina River, and this 1874 bird's-eye view shows how the city looked to a viewer above its rooftops. Views like this were drawn in elevated perspective so that streets, rail lines, and major buildings could be recognized at a glance, and they were often sold to residents and businesses as a record of local growth. John C. Harkness, who drew many city views in this period, worked with the publisher H. H. Bailey & Co. on the composition. The mills, rail connections, and riverfront activity of the mid-1870s are the details worth studying.
