A bird's-eye panorama of Hackensack, New Jersey, drawn in 1896, shows the Bergen County seat as a town of streets, churches and riverfront lots seen from a high oblique angle, the way a viewer on a hilltop might take it in. The map was issued by O. H. Bailey & Co., a Boston firm that specialized in these detailed panoramic town views, which were popular in the late nineteenth century as both civic portraits and advertisements for local businesses. Hackensack sits on the Hackensack River, and at the time it was growing as a commercial and county center in the New York metropolitan area. Panoramas like this one preserve the layout of buildings and roads from a moment before many later changes.
