Crowds of children filled the South Lawn of the White House on April 10, 1939, for the annual Easter egg roll, and this view takes in the whole mass of them at once. The caption notes that President and Mrs. Roosevelt greeted the children from the south portico, a detail that places the event at the residence during the Roosevelt years. The egg roll had been a White House tradition since the 19th century, and its lawn gatherings drew families from across Washington. The photograph comes from the Harris & Ewing studio, whose glass negatives recorded daily life in the capital for decades.
